Wal-mart in all it's outstanding wisdom has set it's sites to build a Wal-Mart SUPERCENTER on the banks of the Anclote River in the beautiful and historic small town of Tarpon Springs. This SUPERCENTER would be built on US Highway 19 - currently one of the most dangerous highways you can drive. This particular site though is on the banks of the Anclote River.

How do you feel about Wal-Mart putting a SuperCenter where a nesting pair of Eagles live? What can you do to help?
I was opposed to Wal-Mart on the banks of the Anclote River before the Eagles arrived :-) I am of the opinion the Eagles were called (-: Wouldn't it be wonderful to have our breeding pair create more who are able to grow healthy and strong and find their life mate and continue ... hmmm ... yep - that's what I'm working for.

Bald eagles have fortunately been making a comeback in the United States, but they remain a sensitive species and are still protected by the Migratory Bird Act and the State of Florida.
The Tarpon Springs City Commission is meeting next Tuesday and Wednesday nights to discuss whether or not Wal-Mart's development certificate is still valid, and if the company has the right to build. Thankfully, Mayor Beverly Billiris told the St. Petersburg Times last week that "Maybe the eagle will settle the whole thing," so we know that the Commission is going to take the issue of the eagles seriously. A little encouragement from environmentally-minded supporters like you might be all it takes to save the eagles.
Mayor Billiris then went on to vote FOR Wal-Mart ...

It is already widely known that Wal-Mart is the defendant in the largest workplace gender discrimination class action lawsuit in the history of the United States, Dukes v. Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart Watch's research reveals that Wal-Mart's discriminatory practices extend far be yond simply gender or race, and that the methods of discrimination overall are quite extraordinary. To date, we have found more than 700 discrimination cases filed against Wal-Mart since 2004.

As of November 2002 U.S. 19 tops deadly roads ... I wonder the current statistics? Ya know ... things change. IS US 19 still one of the most dangerous highway's in our great nation? Should we add another foreign made products big box mega store on this road ... which happens to be JUST north of an OverPass (a Pinellas Trail - trailhead) and JUST south (actually the property sits on the banks) of the Anclote River - the life's blood of Tarpon Springs.
ALL of the property will be serviced by a 70 foot wide DRIVEWAY ... and a "de-acceleration lane"

The addition of a traffic light at the entrance to the Super Wal-Mart. I am sure the Pinellas County commissioners and MPO executives have reserved parking places at the front of the store. So much more needs to be said about this traffic light, but it makes me sick to think about it.

Wal-Mart Stores spars with small labor-rights group that says it has documented worker abuse at a garment factory in Bangladesh that helps supply the Bentonville-based retailer’s stores.
